The material and intellectual legacy of the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums

Gesamtprojekt
Im Mittelpunkt des Projekts »German-Jewish Cultural Heritage Abroad« steht die Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums, die 1872 in Berlin eröffnet und 1942 durch die Nationalsozialisten geschlossen wurde. Im Rahmen der Kooperation zwischen dem Leibniz-Institut für jüdische Geschichte und Kultur – Simon Dubnow, Leipzig und dem Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem wird nach dem Schicksal und der Bedeutung der Hochschulbibliothek, dem Verbleib ihrer Bücher und nach Initiativen der Nachkriegszeit, ihr intellektuelles sowie kulturelles Erbe zu bewahren, gefragt.
Das auf drei Jahre angelegte interdisziplinäre Vorhaben zielt auf eine Neuvermessung der Nachgeschichte der Berliner Hochschule. Mit Ansätzen aus der materiellen Kulturforschung, der Bibliothekswissenschaft, der Provenienzforschung und der Ideengeschichte wird ihr intellektuelles und materielles Vermächtnis an verschiedenen Orten rekonstruiert. Geplant sind eine Konferenz am Centrum Judaicum in Berlin sowie die wissenschaftliche Erarbeitung verschiedener, nicht nur an das akademische Publikum gerichteter Publikations- und Veranstaltungsformate.
Mittels einer vom Materiellen ausgehenden Perspektive wird im Rahmen des Projekts ein zentrales Feld der jüdischen Ideen-, Kultur- und Gedächtnisgeschichte der Nachkriegszeit neu erforscht. Im ersten Projektmodul werden Nachkriegsinitiativen zur Bewahrung des Erbes der Hochschule beleuchtet. Es waren vor allem Intellektuelle und jüdische Institutionen aus Israel, den Vereinigten Staaten und Großbritannien, die sich darum bemühten. In einem zweiten Modul werden die Wege der verstreuten Bücher aus der zerstörten Bibliothek der Hochschule verfolgt.
Das Projekt wird geleitet von Prof. Dr. Yfaat Weiss, Direktorin des Dubnow-Instituts, und Dr. Irene Aue-Ben- David, Direktorin des Leo Baeck Institute, Jerusalem. Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter: Dr. Anna Holzer-Kawałko (LBI), Bettina Farack (LBI) und Dr. Felix Steilen (DI).

Books from the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums and the National Library in Jerusalem (Dr. Anna Holzer-Kawałko)
In my research project, I focus on the fate of books stemming from the Hochschule that were incorporated into the holdings of the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem (JNUL; today, National Library of Israel). In the immediate postwar period, the JNUL was one of the major recipients of Nazi-looted Jewish libraries and archives, serving as a representative of the vast majority of the Yishuv’s (and later Israel’s) Jewish communities and cultural institutions in restitution negotiations. The library received an estimated number of about 500.000 volumes from Europe, including hundreds of thousands of books of German-Jewish provenance, among them the book collections belonging to the Hochschule that were discovered after the war in Czechoslovakia. Against this background, I explore the transfer of the Hochschule books to Jerusalem from Prague, and their subsequent redistribution in Israel. Relying entirely on the examination of largely unknown primary sources, I seek to shed light on the development of German-Jewish cultural heritage in Israel after the Holocaust. The project contributes to the postwar historiography of the Hochschule’s library, of the JNUL, and more generally, to the cultural historiography of the State of Israel and its hidden and often contested German-Jewish traditions.
Books and Stories: The Meaning of the Library of the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem (Bettina Farack)
The highly idiosyncratic collection of the library of the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem takes center stage in my dissertation project. Founded in 1955, the LBI Jerusalem was one of the recipients in the circulation of books organized by the Jewish National and University Library (JNUL). Preliminary observations suggest that the incorporation of the books salvaged in Europe left an unmistakable imprint on the collection of the LBI Jerusalem. This impression is especially striking in the case of the books once owned by the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums, because they remind us of the prehistory of the Leo Baeck Institute, resulting in a situation in which the present character of its collection is open to debate: Is it a research library as intended by founders and staff, or rather a manifestation of the early idea of a memorial library to German Jewry? To analyze this intriguing collection, I will apply an object-based approach which draws on the library’s books and its material traces as primary sources.
Studien zum materiellen und geistigen Erbe der Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (Dr. Felix Steilen)
Mein Vorhaben geht von den Gelehrten und Studenten der Hochschule aus. Als Inbegriff des „Geistes“ der Institution gelten ihre liberale Verfasstheit und Reformbereitschaft, ihre Rolle als Hort der Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin sowie ihre Bereitschaft, die jüdische Tradition nicht länger exklusiv im Sinne der Offenbarung aufzufassen, sondern gemäß historisch-kritischer Methoden durchzuarbeiten. Sie verbindet eine Reihe außergewöhnlicher Gelehrter unterschiedlicher Disziplinen: Von Vertretern der Wissenschaft des Judentums und der modernen jüdischen Theologie (Abraham Geiger, Salomon Neumann), über die Begründer der Völkerpsychologie (Moritz Lazarus, Heymann Steinthal), zu Historikern (Selma Stern, Eugen Täubler), Sozialwissenschaftlern (Franz Oppenheimer, Paul Eppstein) und bedeutenden philosophisch-theologischen Gelehrten (Ismar Elbogen, Leo Baeck, Max Wiener, Emil Fackenheim). Der Fokus liegt auf dem Ende sowie dem Erbe der Einrichtung. Lebt der Geist der Hochschule weiter, auch nach ihrem gewaltsamen Ende 1933-1942? Gibt es einen verbindenden gelehrten Habitus dieser Einrichtung? Die Geschichte der Hochschule fällt mit der Blütezeit sowie dem anschließenden Verfall der deutschen Wissenschaft zusammen. Fassbar wird die Vertreibung des Geistes über ihre Spuren in der sinnlich-materiellen Wirklichkeit. Daher kommen neben wissenschaftlichen Erzeugnissen zugleich Nachlässe, Korrespondenzen, Tagebücher und Notizen zum Tragen.
