Appropriation and Revitalisation. Negotiation Processes of the German-Jewish Cultural Heritage in Poland

Funding period: 01.10.2022 — 30.09.2025

Project

The research project focuses on the development of the handling of built Jewish heritage using the example of the preservation and utilisation of former synagogues and other Jewish buildings in Poland, particularly in the former German territories, as part of appropriation processes. As knowledge of the surviving buildings improved, citizens in many places became interested in bringing them back into the public consciousness as places of Jewish culture and history, while in other places it was international organisations that drew attention to the “forgotten” synagogues and cemeteries.
