Exploring a Jewish Community in Ukraine today: the case of Odesa

Based on nearly two decades of research in Odesa, Ukraine and her current research with Ukrainian Jewish refugees in Germany and other parts of Europe, Dr. Marina Sapritsky-Nahum will be discussing the current developments of Ukrainian Jewry home and abroad. The 2022 full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a great effect on Jewish life in Ukraine. This talk will address the ways Ukrainian Jewish communities have been altered and fragmented and the creative and inspiring responses of members and leadership amid challenging conditions of war and refuge.

The event will be chaired by Professor François Guesnet.

Marina Sapritsky-Nahum is a Visiting Fellow in Anthropology at University College London, (UCL) and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

François Guesnet is Professor of Modern Jewish History at University College London. He specializes in Eastern European Jewish History and is co-chair of the editorial board of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry. His book publications include Polnische Juden im 19. Jahrhundert (Vienna, Cologne, 1998), and, as editor, Warsaw. The Jewish Metropolis (2015, paperback 2017). A collected volume Sources on Jewish Self-Government in the Polish Lands from Its Inception to the Present is forthcoming (Boston, Leiden: 2022).
