Representing Jewish Heritage with(out) Jews?

Positionalities, Diversity and Participatory Approaches

2025-2028

Main Project

Based on Critical Heritage Studies, the interdisciplinary research project consists of two case studies in Cultural Studies/European Ethnology and Music Education. It examines the complexity of representing and communicating Jewish heritage in contexts authorised by cultural and educational policy, with a particular focus on participatory research approaches. The project offers a substantial and empirically grounded contribution to the (re-)discursivisation of Jewish cultural heritage, in line mwith the aims of the second funding phase of the SPP. The starting point is based on the hypothesis that Jewish heritage in Germany is not represented in its complexity because, firstly, current Jewish experiences and perspectives have so far only been included to a limited extent in the forms of representation examined. Secondly, the dominant cultural/political framing of remembrance and the focus on predominantly non-Jewish recipients tends to narrow Jewish heritage thematically to a few sections of Jewish history and Jewish lifeworlds. Using the example of the representation of Jewish heritage in UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Case Study I) and in the context of music education in schools (Case Study II), the project investigates the epistemic orders in which Jewish heritage is produced and communicated. These epistemic orders are firstly characterised by a goy-normative perspective, which ultimately formats the Jewish heritage conveyed here in a specific way. Secondly, they are influenced by the anticipation of a predominantly non-Jewish audience. This anticipation in turn has an impact on what is understood and communicated as Jewish heritage, how this is recognised and what communication goals are associated with it. The objective of the project is to gain a new and empirically substantiated perspective on Jewish heritage in its diversity by involving Jewish actors in the form of participatory research, but without taking an essentialist view of Jewish culture or Jewish heritage itself.

Subprojects

Case Study I: “Positionierungen und Repräsentationsarbeit. Jüdische Welterbestätten in Deutschland” (Prof. Dr. Markus Tauschek, N.N.)

The cultural studies project employs a comparative research approach to examine how Jewish cultural heritage is represented and
mediated in authorized cultural frameworks, and how this representation can be enriched through participatory methods. The case
studies are the SchUM cities of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, which were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2021, and the
medieval Jewish heritage in Erfurt, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Using ethnographic methods, the project will
first examine how Jewish heritage is represented in these sites, the cultural and cultural-political frameworks at work, potential
challenges, and how they are addressed. Building on this, emic perspectives will be developed in several research workshops. These
workshops will include Jewish stakeholders and use a participatory, dialogical approach. The goal is to discuss how Jewish voices and
perspectives can be integrated into the mediation of Jewish heritage.

Case Study II: “Participatory and Inclusive Perspectives on Representations of Jewish Heritage in School Music Education” (Prof. Dr. Ina Henning, N.N.)

This case study, conducted at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd, uses ethnographic classroom research to explore how Jewish musical heritage is understood by both students and teachers within the formal educational context, and how these interpretations can be deconstructed through participatory teaching methods. Through participatory research with students, the study gathers representations of Jewish heritage from both emic and etic perspectives, avoiding the privileging or essentializing of any particular Jewish viewpoint. The aim is to reconstruct what knowledge about Jewish heritage has been internalized by students, and in what ways. Additionally, the study examines how Jewish musical heritage can be accurately and diversely represented in contemporary education.
